Event Details: 3D Printing & Drawing: An Overview
3D printing is a tool offering rich scenarios for making and discovering new sculpture techniques and processes. 3D scanning, 3D drawing and 3D printing allow the artist and student new ways to capture and reinvent images. Robert Roesch will provide an overview and teach the basics of 3D drawing and printing. He will talk about how educators can use CAD programs such SketchUp to allow students to create designs from simple formal line drawings as well as using 3D functions in Photoshop or 3D scanning to create designs for 3D printing. Problems in setting up equipment and its operation and challenges to the perception of sculpture as a handmade object will be discussed.
The workshop includes a lecture and PowerPoint presentation highlighting the breadth of the 3D printing explosion, showing ways that this printing technology has allowed us to bring new ideas to life. Participants will have the opportunity to observe a 3D printer actively printing objects and to view 3D printed objects made by students and artists. A hands-on session will follow in the use of the 3D software program SketchUp, a free downloadable program, that is simple enough for elementary school students to use but can also be used by professional artists.
This workshop includes a visual presentation with lecture, examples of methods and projects as well as reference materials for the classroom. No experience in art making is necessary. Teachers will use a free computer program to work on productive exercises. The content and activities of this workshop meet with national standards and are applicable through the grades 1-12 curriculum. This is an enjoyable workshop and a great opportunity to gather new ideas for enriching the curriculum in the classroom, try some creative art activities, and meet other teachers. Light morning refreshments & lunch included.
