Proposal Deadline:
Event Details: Does a "Reduction In Force" (RIF), and a Non-renewal hold the same value for employees? May an employee's voluntary letter of resignation, accepted by the Board, have the right to be rescinded? Can seniority be earned in categories you have not been assigned? Can you be an effective leader without being an ethical one? What will you do when a teacher brings you a love letter he received from a high school student? What are the consequences for a teacher who consciously violates a policy to ethically help a student?

As enthusiastic new administrators, or those transitioning to new responsibilities soon discover, theoretical perceptions of your duties based on real dilemma situations may be grossly underestimated. Decisive actions are universal expectations from all stakeholders and now you are the decisive principle player expected to have the corrective and appropriate solutions!

This forum will include fictitious and documented school decision making scenarios and situational leadership dilemmas that may be daily judgments at the building and central office administrative levels. The solutions shall add tools to your administrative tool box!

The interactive workshop, suggesting your opinion matters, shall also include discussions regarding when to include available personnel resources including law enforcement and legal counsel to assist in the daily decision making judgments that reactively or responsively direct the success or failures that a school system encounters every day.

Join us in this open forum, led by Dr. Robert Previti, Retired Superintendent of Schools, to discuss multi-dimensional, situational decision making from the perspective of Building Level and Central Office Adminis-trators as they relate to employee relations and legal ramifications.

Audience: New Administrators, Graduate Students, Interested Teachers and Professional Support Staff

Proposal Deadline:
Event Details: Youth Mental Health First Aid USA is an education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

What Will Participants Learn?
The course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance use disorder. Participants do not learn to diagnose, nor how to provide any therapy or counseling rather, participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan:

- Assess for risk of suicide or harm
- Listen nonjudgmentally
- Give reassurance and information
- Encourage appropriate professional help
- Encourage self-help and other support strategies

The Youth Mental Health First Aid USA curriculum is focused on information participants can use to help adolescents and transition-age youth, ages 12-18.

Who Should Take This Course?
The course is designed for adults who regularly interact with adolescents (teachers, administrators, staff, coaches). Since 2008, the Mental Health First Aid course has been successfully offered to more than a million people across the USA, including hospital staff, employers and business leaders, faith communities, law enforcement, and the general public.

State/Country: New Jersey

City: Hammonton
State/Country: New Jersey
Proposal Deadline:
Event Details: 3D Printing & Drawing: An Overview

3D printing is a tool offering rich scenarios for making and discovering new sculpture techniques and processes. 3D scanning, 3D drawing and 3D printing allow the artist and student new ways to capture and reinvent images. Robert Roesch will provide an overview and teach the basics of 3D drawing and printing. He will talk about how educators can use CAD programs such SketchUp to allow students to create designs from simple formal line drawings as well as using 3D functions in Photoshop or 3D scanning to create designs for 3D printing. Problems in setting up equipment and its operation and challenges to the perception of sculpture as a handmade object will be discussed.

The workshop includes a lecture and PowerPoint presentation highlighting the breadth of the 3D printing explosion, showing ways that this printing technology has allowed us to bring new ideas to life. Participants will have the opportunity to observe a 3D printer actively printing objects and to view 3D printed objects made by students and artists. A hands-on session will follow in the use of the 3D software program SketchUp, a free downloadable program, that is simple enough for elementary school students to use but can also be used by professional artists.

This workshop includes a visual presentation with lecture, examples of methods and projects as well as reference materials for the classroom. No experience in art making is necessary. Teachers will use a free computer program to work on productive exercises. The content and activities of this workshop meet with national standards and are applicable through the grades 1-12 curriculum. This is an enjoyable workshop and a great opportunity to gather new ideas for enriching the curriculum in the classroom, try some creative art activities, and meet other teachers. Light morning refreshments & lunch included.

Educators attending this interactive and engaging workshop will:

facilitate an approach to deliberately teach the skill of asking questions about observations, data, informational text, misconceptions and the ideas of others (including classmates)
actualize a strategy through which students will effectively make claims, support their claims with evidence, construct explanations and engage in argumentation
recognize how and why students should develop, evaluate, and revise their own models to optimize learning in science and engineering

Event Details: Are you responsible for conducting observations in classrooms where science is all or part of the curriculum? If so, this interactive workshop is for you! The Next Generation Science classroom is not like the one in which you learned about plants, animals, space, motion, atoms, and weather. It's the one where students make claims, support claims with evidence, construct science explanations and engage in scientific argumentation. It's the one where students develop and use models to explain scientific phenomena. It's the one where students engage in the iterative process of engineering design. It's the one where conducting an observation requires a paradigm shift. District and school administrators attending this workshop will:

gain an awareness of the architecture, format and learning progressions of the Standards
actualize a strategy to deliberately teach students to ask the questions that drive their learning
realize what the NGSS science and engineering process look like in action
identify the instructional and conceptual shifts in science and engineering education
recognize the "must-sees" in an NGSS classroom
discuss the impact on your observational practice
