Proposal Deadline:
Event Details: Lets talk about Twitter. Maybe you use it on occasion for different reasons: to follow your favorite celebrities, friends from college, and maybe to catch the latest political news or memes. Maybe you dont use it at all. Your students probably use it to secure their social status with their number of followers, follow reality stars and friends, share photos, and retweet memes. Dont know what a meme is? Dont worry. Thats not what this workshop is about. Its about breaking through the typical use of Twitter and seeing it as a powerful tool for education.
As 21st century educators, we need to address the problematic use of social media demonstrated by too many young people--that is, they use it a lot, but most use it in extremely limited ways. Lets change that. Lets model what it means to be a savvy, responsible, and informed social media user. This workshop will teach you how to use Twitter as a fun, powerful, interactive tool for communication, collaboration, and research. Want to fuse media literacy into your curriculum? Track live socio-political movements? Want to convince your students that people in the real world really do talk about your subject matter? Want to upgrade some of your more simple class activities? Twitter is your tool. In this workshop, well walk through all of Twitters best features for education, discuss and experiment their application in our classrooms, and address behaviors and habits that promote good digital citizenship. You will need a smartphone, tablet, or laptop with wifi capabilities for this workshop.
This workshop will be presented by Bayly DiPilato, a high school teacher of English from Atlantic County Institute of Technology who holds a COGS in Educational Technology and was recently featured in NPR Education for her use of Twitter in the classroom.
