Event Details: Spend a day with our Robots! In this workshop participants will gain powerful knowledge in STEAM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math). Participants can experiment with robots like Ozobots, Lego Mindstorms EV3, Finches and Ollies. These robots are machines that can do three things: sense, act and think. Robots are now accessible for students of all ages and abilities and are an engaging classroom tool to support STEAM. Participants will have the opportunity to develop ideas to engage students with robots that students can either build themselves or transform with maker materials.

In this workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore Drive, Docs, Sheets and Forms. Participants will also have the opportunity to spend time exploring the Google products with the guidance of the instructor.
Docs-Participants will create documents, share and work on a collaborative document, forms, slideshows and sheets.
Drive-Participants will set up their own site, select a theme, add a couple of pages, edit a page, insert a calendar and an item from their drive.
Sheets- Participants will explore ways to best utilize the grid-like format of the spreadsheet for creative tasks, like quick data visualizations, checklists and lesson plans.
Forms-Participants will see examples of exciting uses of forms and have the opportunity to create a form on their own, with the support of the instructor.

Event Details: Trauma is often the underlying cause of behavioral challenges in the classroom and in the community. This program will examine how an awareness of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Resilience, and Diversity can help to improve teaching and learning. Participants will examine the effects of trauma on the brain and behavior of children, and learn about ways to manage behavior. This program is intended for K-12 educators, social workers, and mental health professionals, and will be presented by faculty from the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the School of General Studies at Stockton University.

Examining the Role of Social Workers and Education Professionals in Building Resilience Following Crisis: Beyond the Emergency Department and Classroom
This session will provide a short introduction to the concept of resilience in emergency and crisis planning and recovery, with special emphasis on developing preparation strategies that create community trust. We will examine how the response of social institutions like healthcare and educational have been highlighted following previous events, and create a framework for understanding future preparedness priorities. We will discuss the function of institutions in society and how to leverage their role to create community security.

The role of ACES in Educational and Health Care Settings: Who We Encounter and How We Respond
This presentation provides and overview of the types and sources of traumatic stress experienced by people in our communities. With the goal of identifying the sources of trauma, the presenter asks the audience to consider the complexities of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), exploring the information acquired over time by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Understanding the ACES prevalence and impact across the country can help shape interactions with those exposed to trauma. We will discuss the ramifications of ACES and how they impact the likelihood and experiences of Secondary Traumatic Stress in educators and health care professionals. Suggestions for shaping professional strategies, including resiliency, will be introduced.

The Question of Ethics in Diverse Societies under Stress
This session will examine ethical questions raised for the helping professions by the field of atrocity prevention. The presenter will offer a brief overview of atrocity prevention, followed by the presentation of a case study from the historical period leading up to the Holocaust, when economic and political crises strained commitment to diversity in Germany. Participants will examine the questions raised by the historical case study from different angles, discussing how social conflict and widely-held biases can impact the way communities understand ethical choices.

The workshop will be presented by Dr. Lori Desautels and Mr. Michael McKnight
Dr. Lori Desautels, is an assistant professor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels at Butler University in Indianapolis. Before coming to Butler University, Lori was an Assistant Professor at Marian University in Indianapolis and earlier on taught children and adolescents with emotional challenges in the upper elementary grades, worked as a school counselor in Indianapolis, was a private practice counselor and co-owner of the Indianapolis Counseling Center, and was a behavioral consultant for Methodist Hospital, in Indianapolis on the adolescent psychiatric unit.
Lori's passion is engaging her students through neuroscience in education, integrating Mind Brain Teaching and Learning Strategies into her courses at Marian and now Butler University .
Lori has conducted workshops throughout the United States and abroad, recently returning from Dubai. Lori's second book was published in January 2016, "Unwritten, The Story of a Living System," co-authored with Michael McKnight.

Michael McKnight is currently an educational specialist for the New Jersey Department of Education working in the Cape May and Atlantic County Office of Education. Michael works closely with the 42 school districts in the counties and is involved with a wide range of school issues. His work includes curriculum development, county testing coordinator, professional development and monitoring of school district programs.
Prior to joining the Department of Education Michael was a special education teacher for 13 years working and learning with emotionally and behaviorally troubled adolescents. He also was an administrator at Atlantic County Special Services School District for 10 years and was responsible for the programming for troubled students, ages 5 thru 21 years, removed from the local school district.
Michael has a passion for creating and supporting Reclaiming Environments for "at-risk" children and youth as well as the adults who serve them. Michael is a senior trainer for the Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) Institute. LSCI is an advanced therapeutic strategy for helping challenging students.
He has been involved with program and staff development for over 30 years. He views himself, not as an expert, but as a learner and a teacher who has always enjoyed building strength based cultures with others.

Event Details: The Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway is a three-day conference where educators hone their creative writing skills and expand their teaching strategies. Now in its 25th year, the Getaway is known for challenging and supportive workshops featuring small classes led by award-winning professionals. Pulitzer Prize winners Stephen Dunn and Gregory Pardlo are special guests at this year's conference.

Engage with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards by practicing different types of writing for different purposes and audiences.

Event Details: In this full day workshop that combines both "The Calm and Connected Classroom" and "Further Along the Road of the Calm and Connected Classroom" teachers are introduced to the behind-the-scenes world of students and the emotional and biological effects of trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on the developing brain. Teachers learn techniques to manage stress in the classroom through mindfulness and social-emotional activities and learn best practices to promote positive classroom culture. Event Details: The goal of this conference is to learn to recognize the signs and sources of trauma in children and develop strategies to help them thrive in our schools and communities.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Robin Hernandez-Mekonnen PhD, MSW (University of Pennsylvania), is an Associate Professor of Social Work and faculty of the Child Welfare Education Institute at Stockton University. Dr. Hernandez-Mekonnen has over 20 years of child welfare experience and has been engaged in research and policy work for the past decade. Her areas of interest are child welfare, system reform, Title IV-E and workforce improvement, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the intersection of child welfare and immigration, Mexican diaspora, and mixed method research and policy. Her presentation will provide an overview of trauma and how community members and educators can identify signs or sources of trauma. Dr. Hernandez-Mekonnen discusses the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study, and its many correlates and sequelae. Understanding both local connections and public health implications for communities and educators is key to advancing research, policy, and practices. Developing a conscientious approach to addressing ACEs is key to prevention and establishing a resiliency-based framework to strengthening communities.

Breakout Sessions will provide participants with opportunities to explore how to identify signs and sources of trauma and develop effective strategies that insure all children are able to thrive in our schools and communities.

Event Details: This training program is specifically designed to provide administrators of schools which have new or reorganized (e.g., new members, new structure) school building I&RS teams with basic information, materials and skills to help them support the effective implementation of N.J.A.C. 6A:16-8. Professional development credits will be offered to participants.
As a result of their participation in this technical support program participants will be able to:
1. Summarize the provisions of administrative code (N.J.A.C. 6A:16-8) for the implementation of I&RS.
2. Explain the benefits and purposes of using the building-based multidisciplinary team model as a best practice for addressing academic, behavior and health barriers for students in grades K-12.
3. Identify the theoretical and research underpinnings of the I&RS multidisciplinary team model.
4. Describe and identify the importance of each of the following components of the NJDOE?s best practice model for the implementation of I&RS:
a. Procedures for identifying and assisting students with academic, behavior and health problems.
b. A systematic problem-solving process for the creative and resourceful resolution of identified educational problems.
c. The characteristics of an effective consultation model.
d. The review of the building?s system of I&RS in order to make recommendations for improving school programs and services.
5. Develop a plan of action for I&RS program implementation.
6. Apply research-based principles and practices to the planning, management and maintenance of building-based I&RS teams.
7. Describe the importance of developing collaborative relationships with diverse school and community resources in support of I&RS activities.
8. Describe applications of the I&RS program that support school-wide planning.
