Event Details: Today's school leaders work in a dynamic, fast-paced school law environment. Each day brings new changes in statute, code and case law. Administrators, whether veteran or new, are challenged to keep up with the changes. In these intensive School Law workshops participants will review current legal standards on Student Rights Including the HIB Update with new regulations effective July 1, 2018, Employer and Employee Rights, and Special Education.
Day One: Student Rights Including HIB Update-New Regulations Effective July 1, 2018
The Student Rights module will focus on student rights and responsibilities, including constitutional rights such as freedom of speech, disciplinary actions, social media, 24/7 rule, student athletic contracts, transgender rights, and a special emphasis on the new HIB regulations. We will go back to the basics and move forward to review relevant school law cases. This interactive workshop will include a mock disciplinary incident where we will walk you through the disciplinary incident up to a board hearing. We will apply the law, review the legal standards and discuss proper investigation documentation.
Day Two: Employee and Employer Rights and Special Education
The Employer and Employee Rights module will focus on employer and employee rights and responsibilities, including constitutional rights such as freedom of speech, disciplinary actions, grievances, tenure charges, non-renewals, and reductions in force, among other topics. This interactive workshop will include mock tenure charges where we will walk you through the tenure charge process, concentrating on the district's roles and responsibilities. We will apply the law, review the legal standards and discuss proper documentation.
The Special Education module will focus on the district's obligations under the law for special education and Section 504 Plan students, including an emphasis on development of the IEP, student discipline, HIB, home-instruction and graduation. We will also review the recent Supreme Court Decision and what it means for you and your district. This interactive workshop will include a mock due process petition where we will walk you through the special education litigation process, concentrating on the district's roles and responsibilities.
Registration includes morning refreshments and lunch.
